Disability

Disability means different things to different people. In Community Services we have different teams with different areas of expertise.

Our services for disabled people

There is a specialist service for children with disabilities and their families, and in Adult Services we have teams with specialist knowledge in different areas of disability, so that we know our service users will get the best service from us, tailored to their own additional needs.

The biggest difficulty is gathering accurate information about adults with additional needs - who? where? and most importantly, how can we contact them regularly?

There are a number  forums for disabled people to keep in contact with us and help us to develop the services they want to use - we call these 'Partnerships'.

For children with disabilities and their families, there is the Children and Young People's Strategic Partnership.

If you have a Learning Disability and would like to get involved in shaping services, please contact the Learning Disabilities Partnership.

If you have a physical and/or sensory impairment and would like to get involved in shaping services, please contact the Physical and Sensory Impairment Partnership.

What services are available?

Our work is shaped by the overall philosophy of supporting people with particular needs so that they can continue to live independently or with as much independence as possible, making their own choices about how to live their lives wherever that is feasible.

Depending on the needs of the individual, various day services provide a range of employment and supported work options, and social, leisure educational and day care opportunities. Sometimes it can be possible to help people to make use of mainstream social, leisure, educational or other opportunities.

Residential services are also available but we are continuing to make significant changes as we move from a traditional residential care approach towards supporting people to live in homes that are much more their own.

Joint working with the Health Authority is crucial in meeting people’s need appropriately and effectively. It plays an important part in developing and maintaining adult services.
