Home library service

Coventry Libraries and Information Services, in partnership with Age  Concern Coventry, operate a library service for housebound people  throughout the city.

Information about the home library service

The service is completely free and  includes books, large print books, talking books, compact discs and information as required.  Customers can request any item free of charge and there is no limit (within reason) to the number of items borrowed and delivered once a month.

Volunteers from Age Concern Coventry, who are interviewed and have to provide character references before they are allowed to operate the  service, carry out the delivery.  Volunteers work in pairs, for safety  and security reasons, and carry Age Concern ID badges.  The books etc are supplied from individual Community Libraries, with collections chosen by local staff for each library round . The service operates on  weekday mornings throughout the year; as far as possible we try to work  around customer's existing regular commitments e.g. visits to day centres.

While we try to target the most needy individuals, they do not have to be strictly housebound in order to receive the service – for example,  many people can get to a library by some means but cannot carry the  books etc home.  Also, although the general guideline for Age Concern  is serving people over 55 years, some of our customers are disabled  people below this age.

Anyone requesting the service is visited by an experienced and trained volunteer to gather information on the person's requirements and reading interests and this information is treated as confidential and filed with Age Concern and the relevant Community Library.

Requests for the service and any queries should be made to Graham Partridge.
