Exhibition: Face to Face - Free
Herbert Art Gallery and Museum
This exhibition
features the work of photographer James Mollison and includes 30 powerful, large-scale portraits of our closest relatives
– the apes. Face to Face from the Natural History Museum features emotive portraits of gorillas, chimpanzees, orang-utans
and bonobos and highlights the vitality and intelligence of these magnificent and threatened animals - our closest biological
relatives. Reproduced at over two metres high, each of the 30 photographs displayed tells a personal story and encourages
us to consider our relationship with, and our treatment of the natural world. It does this by bringing us face to face with
some of the individual animals that have been most deeply affected by the actions of humans. For more information visit www.theherbert.org
To 26 September
Installation: Roots: A Contemporary Art and Natural History
Nature is currently in a period of mass extinction, change is ever present as we struggle to reconcile the impact our species continues to have on others. This installation provokes the visitors to question their own impact on man’s closest relatives, opening up topics that often get over-looked. Exploring the themes of deforestation, extinction and animals in captivity, the artwork touches upon these hard-hitting subjects in the way of photography, and installation based sculpture. The Herbert’s Natural History collection allows you to discover some of the UK’s most endangered species and what actions you can take to save them. This element of the installation/exhibition brings the underlying themes closer to home giving visitors the chance to relate to wildlife they would see in and around their back gardens. on the home page of the website, and come along to a trial class. Why not bring a friend! British Military Fitness provide
challenging fitness classes for ALL ability levels in the great outdoors. Their fitness instructors have helped thousands
of people to get fitter than they ever have been, lose weight and feel positive. The classes provide a refreshing change from
the boredom of the gym. They last for one hour and are designed for all levels of ability - from the extremely fit, to people
who have not exercised for years and are put off by the thought of working out on their own. Classes involve circuits, team
and paired exercises, static and relay exercises all taken in a military style.
Classes are: motivational, highly social,
challenging and above all else the emphasis is on fun! Classes do not involve: screaming and shouting, humiliating or degrading
people in any way shape or form. All the instructors come from an Armed Forces background and have a recognised fitness qualification.
There is a class ratio of, on average, one instructor to 15 members. This enables the instructors to pay each member more
attention to ensure the exercises and activities are carried out safely and correctly to help the members get fitter quicker.

Herbert Illuminations: Football in Edwardian Britain
Herbert
Art Gallery and Museum 12.30pm – 1.30pm FREE
Dilwyn Porter of the International Centre for Sports History at De Montfort
University provides an insight into English sporting life in the years before the First World War and some of the personalities
who played ‘the people’s game’.
We’ll look at footballing celebrities – the Reverend Kenneth Hunt, the only vicar ever
to play in a Cup Final; C.B. Fry, so famous for his sporting prowess that he was offered the throne of Albania; ‘Fatty’ Foulke,
the 20-stone goalkeeper; and Charles Buchan, the model professional.
By telling the story of Edwardian football we open
up the history of Edwardian society.

Heritage Shared 2010 - Udham Singh
the life of an Indian revolutionary
Herbert Art Gallery and Museum 7.00pm
to 8.30pm
As part of Heritage Shared month, the Herbert and the Anglo-Sikh Heritage Trail host an event looking at Udham
Singh. Although he is a controversial figure in Anglo-Sikh history, very little is known about him. However, his life spans
a period of turbulence and resistance played out against the backdrop of increasing Sikh unrest against British occupation.
Marking the 70th anniversary of his trial and execution in London for the 'avenge' killing of Michael O'Dwyer, this event
will see Eve Haddow from ASHT present recent research on his life and legacy. This is a not to be missed event exploring the
tensions and contradictions at the very heart of 20th century Anglo-Sikh history, followed by a panel discussion and Q and
A with Dr Gurnam Singh of Coventry University.
