Elections

Elections are a democratic process in which citizens aged 18 or over elect political candidates to represent them and their interests locally (on the City and Parish Councils), nationally (in Parliament) or internationally (in the European Parliament).


City Council Elections

Coventry is divided into 18 wards each with three Councillors. Councillors are elected by a simple majority and serve for four years at a time.

Elections to the City Council are held in three years out of four on the first Thursday in May.

This year's elections were on 1 May. There are no City Council elections scheduled for 2009.

The table below shows a summary of the make-up of the City Council before and after the elections in 2008.

Parliamentary Elections

Parliamentary or General Elections are held at least every five years and can be called at any time which the Government of the day chooses. Coventry has three Parliamentary Constituencies, Coventry North East, Coventry North West and Coventry South, each represented by one Member of Parliament (MP). Follow this link to find your MP

The European Parliament serves for a fixed term of five years, and the next elections are due to be held on 4 June 2009. Coventry is part of a very large West Midlands Constituency which is represented by 7 Members of the European Parliament (MEPs). Follow this link to find your MEP
