Naming ceremonies

If you would like to welcome your child into your family by celebrating in a non-religious way, then why not consider a naming ceremony?

These ceremonies are a very special way of announcing your child's birth and publicly celebrating with your family and friends. The ceremonies are not only restricted to babies, siblings of the newborn child can be included in the ceremony for no additional charge. They are also a way of welcoming older stepchildren or adopted children into a relationship within their new family units.

The ceremony is an opportunity to have a formal and dignified event that you will give you the opportunity to:

  • Welcome the child into the family and community
  • Publicly announce their names and give the reasons for the choice (optional)
  • Parents make personal promises to the child to nurture them until adulthood
  • Parents are given the opportunity to make promises of commitment to each other
  • Choose friends or family to take a special part in the ceremony by pledging their special relationship with the child as 'Supporting Adults'
  • Involve grandparents with special promises
  • Invite other people who may be close to the child(ren) to perform readings

Any parent or legal guardian of the child is welcome to arrange one of these ceremonies.  They can be held in the historic Cheylesmore Manor House building or any other venue that has a licence to perform marriages. Fees

Please note: naming ceremonies have no legal status and cannot be used to change a child's name. The child's birth certificate will need to be shown before a ceremony can be booked.

If you are interested in arranging one of these ceremonies then please contact the Register Office.
